Grand Pa’ & Alda Reunion

Around 1974, Jean died in Tucson.  Grandpa’ stayed on at the ranch for a while.  Plans were being made to sell the Rancho Romero.  As I understand it, a developer bought the ranch and turned many acres into a “dude ranch, golf course & resort”, they sub-divided the rest into a commercial parcels and condominiums.  The last time that I visited Rancho Romero was in 2007.  The Oracle Highway had been widened to 4 lanes; the frontage property was covered with a sea of asphalt and strip-malls.  The ranch house was still there, fenced-in, vandalized and vacant. Sick!

Around 1978 grandpa’ was having a hard time of it after Jean passed away and the Rancho Romero had been sold.  He decided to reunite with his ex – Alda, evidently for company and to reminisce over the good ole’ days.

Around 1980 my cousin, Leslie jr. was visiting grandpa’ while he was staying at Alda’s house in Auburn, California.  Grandpa’ asked Leslie - “take me with you!”  Evidently the ‘reminiscing’ was going nowhere and Pete wanted to leave.  So, Leslie took grandpa’ home with him and built him a room adjacent to his house in Sunland, California.  Leslie’s family had horses and chickens that grandpa’ would spend his days feeding, collecting eggs - he even named all the chickens.  I understand Pete was a L.A. Dodger fan and liked Tommy Lasorda.
